Pench National Park, located in the southern reaches of Madhya Pradesh along the Maharashtra border, forms part of a larger protected landscape shaped by the Pench River. Spread across a gently undulating terrain, the park is known for its open forests and balanced ecology rather than vast size.
The landscape is dominated by teak and mixed deciduous forests, interspersed with grassy clearings and seasonal streams. The Pench River and its reservoirs serve as the park’s lifeline, sustaining wildlife through the drier months and lending the forest a steady, unhurried rhythm.
Pench supports a healthy population of tigers, alongside leopards, sloth bears, wild dogs, gaur, and a wide range of herbivores such as chital, sambar, nilgai, and wild boar. This diversity ensures a stable prey base and contributes to the park’s ecological resilience.
The park is also rich in birdlife, with numerous woodland and water-associated species found across its varied habitats. Open forests, flowing water, and seasonal grasslands together define Pench as a forest of quiet balance—approachable, enduring, and deeply rooted in central India’s natural heritage.
Namaskar, I am Dr Suneet Raut. Myself and my wife, Dr Sushila visited Kanha National park, last year, by April 2025. Our close friend, Dr Prakash Babu, called me whether we were interested doing this Safari trip. As we both are nature lovers, and having visited Tadoba and other sanctuaries, were delighted by this call. It was last week of April. We flew from Mumbai to Jabalpur, then to Kanha sanctuary. Dr. Babu brings with him rich and varied experiences from safaris and sanctuaries across India. Along with wildlife exploration, he consistently strives to inculcate a love and respect for nature among the common man. Living in harmony with nature is essential for the survival of our ecology, which today stands at the edge of a cliff, challenged by increasing human impact. We wish him the very best in pursuing his passion, not only through curated wildlife experiences but also in contributing towards the protection of sanctuaries and wildlife. Apart from this, his deep knowledge of birdlife, combined with immersive wildlife exploration, truly serves as a panacea for human stress.
Pench National Park lies in the southern part of Madhya Pradesh, along the Maharashtra border, and is part of a larger protected forest area. Though not very big, the park has a well-balanced ecosystem that makes every safari here interesting and worthwhile.
The landscape is gently rolling, with open woodlands, grassy clearings, and seasonal streams. Most of the forest is made up of teak and mixed deciduous trees, giving the area a distinct look. The Pench River and its reservoirs play a key role here, especially during the dry months, supporting both wildlife and the overall ecosystem.
Pench is often associated with Rudyard Kipling’s Jungle Book, giving it a unique cultural connection alongside its ecological importance.
Pench is a mix of open woodland and water-based habitats, spread across both Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. This landscape makes wildlife sightings easier and more frequent.
Also spotted: Wild Dogs (Dhole), Chital (~40,000), Sambar, Barking Deer & 300+ Bird Species
Pench is known for its rich variety of wildlife, making it a great place for a jungle safari.
The park has a healthy population of tigers, and sightings are fairly common, especially in areas with good prey movement.
The reserve is home to leopards, sloth bears, wild dogs and jungle cats though they are harder to spot. These predators play an important role in maintaining the ecological balance of the park.
Herbivores like chital, sambar, nilgai, and wild boar are seen quite often, usually grazing in open areas or moving along forest edges. They form the main prey base for the predators.
Gaur(Indian Bison) are seen grazing in the open grasslands.
Pench also has a rich birdlife, with both woodland and water birds present throughout the park, making it an excellent place for birdwatching as well.
Pench has both core and buffer zones, each offering a slightly different experience:
Turia Zone (MP Side)
The most popular entry gate with strong tiger sighting chances.
Includes areas like Karmajhiri, known for dense forests and active wildlife movement.
Less crowded and more peaceful.

Mogarkasa Gate-A black Panther is being sighted regularly in the area.
Sarhi Zone features beautiful landscapes with hills and lakes, along with abundant wildlife.
Jeep safaris in Kanha National Park are conducted with trained drivers and experienced naturalists. They help visitors explore different areas of the park and better understand animal behaviour.
